UFOs and Music videos

Did you ever have one of your film shoots mistaken for a UFO/Aliens?

I always laugh thinking about this project. This was our first video for August Burns Red and was earlier in our music video career.I always laugh thinking about this project. This was our first video for August Burns Red and was earlier in our music video career. We always had ideas that were bigger than the budget, but that never stopped us. I don’t think we could operate the way we did back then. We had a wonderful circle of friends who were most likely still in school, but we brought them along on many of our shoots. With the help of one or two experienced gaffer/grip we managed to pull off some silly stuff.

In this case, we set off to rural Pennsylvania. I don’t even recall if we got proper permission to shoot where we were. Our rag tag crew built two 12x12s, scaffolding and managed large lights with a grip truck and a generator truck. This was nuts. This should have been a much bigger crew. But somehow we did it and lived to tell the tale.

So after we wrapped 24 hours later, we went to a bar that Steve’s mom worked at. We go to find out she had several patrons stop in throughout the night saying they saw a UFO/Aliens, but it was just our lighting setup they were seeing from a very far distance.

We slept for a few hours and then shot the performance the next day. Not only was it a cloudless day, but we were using mirrors for lighting. We roasted the band. Sorry! But filming Matt Griener, the drummer, is always a highlight. The entire band is incredible talented, but Matt is on a whole other level.

We also shot this on our beloved Panasonic HVX with a 35mm lens adaptor. IYKYK 🤠

Success? I think so! This set off a wonderful relationship with the guys in the band. They’re still killing it today.
